In accordance with the basic orientation and principles of the national security stated in National Security Strategy, Defense Strategy and laws in the field of security of the Republic of Serbia, the MIA is competent to perform intelligence activity significant for the defense. The activity relates to gathering, analysis, estimation, protecting and dissemination of data and information on potentional and real threats, activities, plans or intentions of foreign countries and their armed forces, international organizations, groups and individuals (Article 24 of the Law on Military Security Agency and Military Intelligence Agency). It is also tasked with planning the intelligence protection of MOD and SAF and managment of intelligence and reconnaisance structures (Strategic Defense Overview).

Data and information are of military, military-political and military-economical character. Special importance is given to data and information on proliferation of arms and military equipment and threats of terrorism directed from abroad toward the defense system of the Republic of Serbia.
