Day of the Military Intelligence Agency

The Military Intelligence Agency celebrates 5th of March as its Day

Pursuant to the Article 24 of the Law on the Serbian Armed Forces, at the proposal of the Minister of Defence, the President of the Republic of Serbia Tomislav Nikolic on 7th July, 2015 has rendered the decision on determination of the Day of the Serbian Armed Forces and other military celebrations thus determining that the Day of the Military Intelligence Agency is celebrated on 5 March. The decision was published in the Military Official Gazette on 27 July, 2015.

The Military Intelligence Agency celebrates this day because on 5 March,1884 (22 February according to the Old calendar), within the process of organization and modernization of the Serbian Army, the “Regulation on General Staff Vacation” was adopted with which the Foreign Section within the Operational Division of the Main General Staff was formed.

Thus, for the first time in modern Serbian country the military intelligence was institutionalized and the organizational body of the Army which was tasked solely with intelligence tasks was created.

The Foreign Section “was studying European and neighboring countries and armies, primarily their organization, structure, composition, number of soldiers, deployment and education”.
